Take the pain. Ignite it. Tie a noose around your mind, Loose enough to breathe fine and tie it To a tree. Tell it, “You belong to me! This ain’t a noose. This is a leash, And I got news for you: you must obey me.”
- “Holding on to You” - twenty | one | pilots
Quick sketch. I really want to do a proper version of this when I get the time, but just wanted to get the image down for now.
I get so many messages from all of this song, but here’s my take from this part in the second verse. We’re all looking for happiness, but what I find is that people think they’ll find it by escaping the pain, and that’s what they focus on. STOP THE PAIN. Their whole endeavor for personal happiness revolves around stopping the pain, and they get stuck. I know I did for so many years only because I had no idea how to escape all of the hurt.
But in reality, we’ll never escape this noose of negative circumstances. It’s just the way things are. So we need to establish in our minds to use the bad to push us further. “Take the pain. Ignite it.” The noose is around your mind, but it’s not just a noose. It’s a leash. It is what you make of it, so don’t let it consume you. Take control and use the pain as a message to yourself and to others to be stronger.
That’s at least what I pulled for myself from the lyrics. What I love about Tyler and Josh’s music is that different people can get so many unique meanings from it. |-/
